I just saw "Saved" directed by Sandy Stern and Michael Stipe. I know that there will be a lot of people, mainly Christians, that will oppose this movie. I can see why they would look at the trailer and instantly oppose the movie. I encourage you to not take this stand unless you have seen the movie in is entirety. I generally liked the film and I found a lot of good points in the movie. There were some things expressed in the movie that obviously I would not agree with. But on the whole I liked this movie. Man, I sound like a movie critic!
The first 30 minutes of the movie I wanted to puke!! The was so much Christianese and stupid Christian propaganda that I wanted to denounce that I am under that umbrella. It ticks me off that there is so much of that Christian crap out there. I will never have a fish on my car, I will never wear a living-epistle t-shirt, and I will not design cutesy "I am a Christian and you are not!" propaganda. I love God and I am not saying that this stuff is bad but I don't get how it helps any nonbeliever come to know Christ. I have never heard some one's testimony on how they came to know Christ through someone's t-shirt or bumper sticker. All this stuff does is reenforce the fact that you have to be part of our club to hang out with us.
The question was asked at lunch today, "What do you think God thinks about Christianity and this movie?" I would say that God has to look down and be disappointed with us so called Christians. I would think that first of He would find this movie funny. Second that He would agree with a lot of the movie's satire. The longer I am a Christian the more I tend to call myself a Christ follower. The term Christian has become such a joke. It is hard to outlive the stereotype that the world has of Christians. The first thing that the world needs to know is that we are not perfect. There are so many fake Christians like Mandy Moore's character that have all the answers, judge people behind Christian justification and tweak the bible's message to fit their agenda. I will be the first to admit that I have done all of these. That is the key reason I need Christ because I am, first of all, a sinner.
There is so much in this movie that I think that it will take a couple of days or months to really grasp all this movie has to say. I hope that you will go see it with an open mind and be willing to laugh at it. I really do not believe that the movie is mocking Christianity. I think that it gives a good look into what happens when you live a "Christian" life that is not lined up with the truth of the bible.
