Designers everywhere love the Mac. There is no doubt that a lot of designer use the fantastic piece of equipment. We love how easy it is to use, the fact that there are great little programs integrated in and how it is all wrapped up in a stylish case.
Let’s take a look at hose great little programs, shall we?. They are all part of iLife. New Macs come with it standard. There is iPhoto to keep track of all your photos. It has the ability to get rid of red eye, crop the photo or even resize it for an email. What about iMovie? Now almost anyone that gets their hands on a Mac can now edit movies and make their own. You can import clips, arrange clips and even transition between clips. After you have created your movie you can now burn it to DVD with iDVD. You can even have custom menus! They have also added GarageBand to the arsenal. Now you can make your own music.
All of this is great until you really start to think about it. It occurred to me today that Mac, the one who has brought design out of the dark ages, might have worked the designers out of a job. Obviously we will always need designers but has the workload lessened due to prosumers creating their own materials? Now that we can get rid of the red eye ourselves we no longer need to take photos to a lab to get them fixed. We also no longer need a video guy to shoot video and edit it. We no longer really need the formal training that it used to take to know what you are doing.
We can see the effects of this around us if we take the time to look. There is bad art out there all over the place. Since there is no longer the formal training behind some of the work the quality suffers and often society suffers.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love my Mac and do not foresee a change, but this is definitely something that us designers need to keep in mind.
